With the new ordinance in place to keep those odd / even days at bay, last week the Public Works Department of Eau Claire had their Media Day. A day when media and others can tour their amazing facilities and even drive a snowplow! Yes, the big ones with the dump truck.
Drive it they did, a training course set up like a narrow street in beautiful Carson Park with a few training cars as real obstacles. I enjoyed watching media and other council members take their hand at the wheel.
Then was my chance. Troy, the driver, was more than patient and I am thankful to have people like him on our crews. Imagine a 16 hour work day in this large machine making our streets safe. Traveling at a zippy speed of 2mph, I successfully maneuvered around closely spaced cones. I have to say I did pretty well. However, returning to the start of the short course, a mirror from a junk training car apparently jumped out and hit the plow blade. Who knew mirrors could do that! Well, they can’t. “Crunch” was the loud sound that all of the people gathered there heard as I just ‘touched’ the mirror.
Rest assured my service will remain on the City Council and not as backup for public works plowing!!!
The staff is awesome. Tim, Troy, Larry and others, my hat is off to the fine job you do!
